Photography Changes The transition continues. Some photography can still be done better using film. Today, but possibly not next year, I can go forth with an old 4x5 camera and a few sheets of the wonderful color films made by Kodak or Fuji to make images that are sharper, more detailed, than I can make with any digital camera I can carry into the field.
Digital Printing The images on this site are made from digitally scanned film. That's a big change. There's been another important change -- a revolution in the printing process.
Archival Images None of the color processes that have been available to us produce images that last. I'm sure you've seen albums filled with faded and discolored photographs. In the last few years, some manufacturers have developed pigment based inks. (The oil paintings that have lasted for centuries use pigments.) Pigment based inks printed on archival 100% cotton rag paper make an image with a display life of at least 100 years. I refer you to www.wilhelm-research.com for more information about this technology. Using digital tools, hardware and software, I can make better (and bigger) images than I ever could using light sensitive papers. |
